“Your pap smear came back abnormal so we’d like you to come back for an ultrasound” was what the woman was saying on the other line just a few months after joe and I got married last year. I had been feeling this persistent pressure in my abdomen, so I made an appointment to get it checked out. What followed was months of back and forth about whether or not I wanted to have a surgery to have the rapidly growing fibroids they had discovered removed.

The possibility of a hysterectomy casually mentioned by my Dr sent me into a months long spiraling devastation. I reluctantly opted for a plan that included infusions and a myectomy, they would only remove the fibroids and a blood transfusion would only happen if my life depended on it. Three times the surgery was scheduled and twice rescheduled over the span of four months, my entire year had been dominated by these invisible aliens growing inside of me.

On Friday, October 19th, I had three fibroids removed from the cavity surrounding my uterus as well as inside of it. They were large, the biggest one growing from outside to inside my uterus, measuring 12 cm in diameter, that’s five inches wide, the size of a large grapefruit, for those who have to google it like I did.

The second half of this year became an exhaustive cycle, a race against time as every month I tried to make up for the blood I had lost the month prior, all while fielding excruciating symptoms that would sometimes have me out of commission for weeks on end. Four rounds of six Iron infusions helped me to catch up enough to be able to safely have this surgery, and I’m so grateful for the team at RWJ, my OB and Surgeon Dr. Margaret Andrin and my hematologist, Dr Faye Yin for all that they did in helping me prepare and feel confident about the surgery.

For the past six years, the desert has been a plac

For the past six years, the desert has been a place of refuge for me and in that refuge I’ve created art, friendships and more. I’ve licked my wounds and watered my flowers here, And I I come to what I feel is nearing the end of my journey with my fibroids as I know them, it only felt right to book another trip to the desert. This time I was in Joshua tree and as usual the desert’s energy ran through my spirit like a herd of wild horses and I was ensconced once again in her mighty beauty. Her power. Her life force.

I’m so ready for this part of my life to be over and to step into the next, so I do it with this desert energy in mind and in heart, for I believe the most important lesson I can learn from her is resiliency.
